"La Strada" 2004

From July 30th until August 6th, 2004 the international festival of street- and puppet theatre - "La Strada" - took place for the 7th time.
Many artists showed their proficiency and charmed the people from Graz and their guests.

Using an old Canadian tradition as a basis, the performers of "Les Sages fous" from Quebec conjure up their richly atmospheric street theatre, their opulent costumes holding the audience spellbound and their fast-paced comedy defining this "theatre in motion". Commedia dell´arte for children and grown-ups.

  Fantastic dance theatre, compelling music: what more could you want?
  A glass stage perhaps? Under which you could relax in deck chairs and watch the dancers at work?
  Fascinating, and certainly the best way to be a voyeur and let yourself be trampled upon. But don´t worry: for those who won´t be able to get a seat under the stage, this show will still be great pleasure!

Professional dancer Claire Ducreux has a special gift: she can tell stories, acrobatic, poetic stories that simply stir all who watch. Like when the petite Frenchwoman makes a park bench her stage, and partner!

Something big is happening at this dark festival of art: performance and installation, pictures, sculptures, dance, puppetry and fireworks merge to form a fairground of the abysmal.
Austrian and British artists demonstrate the close proximity between the eerie and the comical on the "Unfair Ground" in the Augarten park.

An absolute favourite was here again: Leandre, the lyric clown from Spain, entertained with a lively stage performance: In "Desbandada" he combined his own special silent movie comedy style with the cool vibe of a three-piece beat band. The result: comedy with a swing. And how!

It´s all happening at the old library: not only are rats and spiders dancing between the books, tom-cat Sigmund is strutting between the shelves. And: the books themselves have their own stories to tell...
Superb puppetry, animation and perfection - a delight for all ages.

Whether as disco machos in bell-bottoms, and on stilts even, bringing the street to its feet with 70s hits, or as mangy travelling entertainers using rubbish from the street as props: the Austrian Irrwisch troupe offer lively, infectious street theatre - delightful, eccentric and clever!

Well somebody's definitely escaped from the play room! Suddenly there's an oversize tumbler toy man rolling back and forth just as a toy should, but in the middle of the street.
So play around with the mute comedy of this droll acrobat - delicious nonsense, theatre at a glimpse.

No, Mr Blahatsch isn´t exactly handsome; and yet he´s a feast for the eyes.
As a roller-skating dancer, he enchants you with his droll grace - but Blahatsch has more to offer; horizontal dances round a lamp post, a cut down velo-solex for transportation and lots of clowning, comedy and pantomime: street entertainment for all.
